Virginia Coastal Cycling: Embracing the Scenic Outdoors

Virginia's coastal region is renowned for its beautiful beaches, picturesque lighthouses, and charming towns. But for cyclists, the diverse and scenic trails truly steal the show. Virginia's coast offers something for every cycling enthusiast, from paved pathways winding through lush woods to gravel trails offering panoramic ocean views.

Gear up with these women's bike shorts!

1. Virginia Beach Boardwalk

Perhaps the state's most iconic coastal cycling route, the Virginia Beach Boardwalk spans three miles along the oceanfront. The trail runs between 40th Street on the north and Rudee Inlet on the south, with access to the Atlantic Ocean. Paved and well-maintained, this trail provides a perfect cycling experience. Enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and a variety of restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues on the other.

2. Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge

The bike trails at the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge are a must-visit for those seeking an intimate connection with nature. The trail connects the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge with Kiptopeke State Park. Located at the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, this refuge offers several miles of mixed-use trails suitable for biking. The scenic routes offer glimpses of habitats ranging from marshes to upland forests. Remember to bring your binoculars!

3. First Landing State Park

First Landing State Park, located in Virginia Beach, offers more than 20 miles of trails suitable for biking. The Cape Henry Trail, the park's primary multi-use trail, is particularly favored by cyclists. This 6.1-mile trail winds through diverse environments, including lush, marshy wetlands, cypress, and southern pine maritime forest. It is possible to work your way to the Virginia Beach boardwalk and its bike path from the Cape Henry Trail.

4. High Bridge Trail State Park

Although not directly on the coast, High Bridge Trail State Park deserves an honorable mention due to its proximity and unique features. A short drive from the coastal area, this park boasts a 31-mile multi-use trail built on an abandoned railway corridor. The crown jewel of this trail is the High Bridge, located near Farmville, offering stunning views of the Appomattox River valley from over 125 feet high. The trail is relatively flat and composed of finely crushed limestone, making it an excellent choice for cyclists of all skill levels.

Whether you're a seasoned cyclist looking for your next challenge or a beginner seeking a leisurely ride with stunning views, Virginia's coastal region has something to suit your preferences. Remember, while enjoying the beauty of these trails, it's essential to leave no trace behind and help preserve these natural habitats for future generations to enjoy. So saddle up, hit the trail, and discover the diverse beauty of Virginia's coastal cycling opportunities!
