Bundle Up the Community: Walkabout Outfitter’s Winter Coat Drive Returns

At Walkabout Outfitter, we believe that staying warm shouldn’t be a luxury—it should be a given. As temperatures drop across Virginia, far too many of our neighbors are facing the season without proper winter gear. That’s why our annual Winter Coat Drive is back, and we’re inviting you to help us spread warmth, dignity, and comfort throughout our communities.

How It Works

From Giving Tuesday, December 2nd through Tuesday, December 9th, all six Walkabout Outfitter locations will serve as drop-off points for gently used or new winter coats. Adult coats, kids’ coats, heavy jackets —all are welcome, as long as they’re clean and in good condition. Every item donated goes directly to local organizations that ensure these essentials reach the people who need them most.

We know it’s easy to overlook that jacket buried in the back of your closet, the one you haven’t worn in years. But for someone else, that same jacket could be the difference between shivering through a cold morning and stepping out with confidence and comfort.

Why It Matters

Virginia’s winters can be unpredictable—icy mornings, blustery winds, and frigid nights are all too common. For neighbors experiencing homelessness or financial hardship, the lack of a warm coat can be truly dangerous. With the rising cost of living, many families are forced to make tough choices between essentials. Warm clothing shouldn’t be one of them.

The coat drive is about more than donations. It’s about restoring warmth in every sense of the word—physical warmth, yes, but also the warmth of knowing that your community cares. Each year, we hear stories from partner organizations about the impact of these coats: a child who can now wait for the school bus without freezing, a parent who can walk to work safely, a senior who no longer fears stepping outside.

A Small Act With Big Impact

Giving back doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as clearing out a closet and dropping off a coat at your nearest Walkabout Outfitter store. And if you don’t have an extra jacket to donate, that’s okay—help spread the word. Share the drive with friends, neighbors, coworkers, and community groups.
