Our mission statement: encourage happiness
Our motto: quit your day job
A BRIEF HISTORY OF WALKABOUT
The journey begins back in 1991 with a love of farmers' markets and serving customers.
Fast forward to today and Tina & Kirk's vision for a local outdoor supplies store is now in 6 locations across Virginia.
LOVE & BIZ
1991-1995
During high school and then college, Tina made and sold baked goods and jams at the local farmers' markets - before farmers markets were even cool. She fell in love with serving customers!
1999
Kirk quit his day job and hiked the length of the Appalachian Trail. Trail name: Flying Monkey
2004
Tina & Kirk meet and fall in love.
Kirk begins to think of work options that wouldn't require him to travel so often so that he can spend more time with Tina.
Kirk uses his Eagle Scout and AT thru-hiker experiences and Tina uses her knowledge and experience of running a small retail business to launch Walkabout Outfitter.
MAKING THE OUTDOORS INCLUSIVE
The vision for their outfitter store was shaped by those Kirk visited along the Appalachian Trail, small but very friendly establishments, along with Tina's idea of creating a more inclusive environment where it doesn't matter who you are, thru-hiker or person who would rather stay urban, will enjoy the experience in Walkabout.
Tina & Kirk opened the first Walkabout Outfitter in Lexington, VA in 2005.
After the success of the first location, more stores popped up in Harrisonburg, Blacksburg, Richmond, Roanoke, and Williamsburg.
MEET OUR TEAM OF OUTDOOR EXPERTS.
We are so proud of the team we've put together to share our love of the outdoors. Each of them has their own experience with nature that they love sharing with others in the store and across our social media platforms.
We highly encourage you to meet them and ask about the local spots your "outdoor enthusiast" heart must check out!
