Eastern Kentucky Mountains

If you’ve visited the Eastern Kentucky region, it’s easy to see why this area is a popular destination for vacation. There are many natural wonders hidden in the thick forests and steep ridges. When planning a trip, you will need more than a long weekend to see everything there is to offer in this beautiful part of the state.

As you prepare to explore the breathtaking natural wonders in the area, there are a few popular loops you can follow. Not only will you find stunning outdoor views, but these roads will lead you to some of the best restaurants and historical sites. At the same time, you can tap your toes as you wander down the Country Music Highway.

South-Central Loop

The first option for exploring the Eastern Kentucky Mountains is to drive down the path the original pioneers followed. You’ll start at the Cumberland Gap, then head down US 25 until you reach Pine Mountain State Resort Park. Be ready to enjoy sweeping vistas as far as the eye can see.

There are other fun places to explore on this loop, including the Daniel Boone National Forest as well as the infamous Cumberland Falls – nicknamed the “Niagara of the South” with a 125-foot-wide curtain of water falling 65 feet. Don’t forget to head South here you can explore the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.

Head to the Renfro Valley Barn Dance Theater, with shows happening every day of the week during the summer months. Renfro Valley is also a fun place to visit because you can visit the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.

Northeastern Loop

If you want to explore the northern area of the Eastern Kentucky Mountains, then hop on Interstate 64 and head to Ashland on the Ohio River. This city’s origins are based as an industrial hub, and it has also developed a vibrant regional culture with fun restaurants and arts. Spend time in the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center, and make sure to stop at the Paramount Arts Center to see the opulent décor.

As you leave Ashland, follow the US 60 highway and head towards Carter Caves State Resort Park. Explore for a bit, then continue down the highway to be refreshed in the stunning waters of Cave Run Lake.

Undoubtedly, the Eastern Kentucky Mountains are a great place to explore. Add this destination to your bucket list and plan a trip for your next family vacation.
